How does the Playbook work?
The playbook supports you as an ecosystem facilitator to define your own way of working successfully with ecosystems and allows you to create your own facilitator Playbook with guiding activities, workshop concepts, methods, instructions and tools. The playbook tools have been created with co-design methods with existing working ecosystems. Our tool offering is based on several years of experience working with ecosystems and research on open innovation ecosystems from our research partners.

Open innovation?
Open innovation is “a distributed innovation process based on purposively managed knowledge flows across organizational boundaries, using pecuniary and non-pecuniary mechanisms in line with the organization’s business model”.
An ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a structure as well as a process for interaction through which the multilateral set of complementary actors that link to an aligned purpose co-create various forms of actor perceived value.
Why does an open innovation ecosystem need a facilitator?
Great ecosystems need great facilitators, great facilitation needs great tools
Collaboration
An ecosystem is comprised of different actors across different organizational boundaries. They need a neutral, objective actor to understand the different needs and motives for collaboration and to find a common ground for collaboration.
Innovation
The main jobs for the ecosystem facilitator are to accelerate innovation, develop collaboration and bring in the necessary knowledge, resources and know-how to ecosystems. Professional facilitation of ecosystems will result in better work, successful ecosystems and savings in both time and cost.
Competence
A facilitator has the competence to support ecosystems in their different phases of development and bring in the necessary tools, methods and resources. A good facilitator will learn how to manage energy in the ecosystems in order to create a necessary feeling of trust. Good facilitation is about designing and managing the processes effectively.
Co-creation
Great faciliation is all about managing people, teams, networks, information, environment and energy. An ecosystem facilitator needs competencies such as people skills, an understanding of innovation systems and financing opportunities, co-creation skills, leadership and management skills, analytical understanding and to a certain extent, subject skills of the topics under development.

How do I get started?
An ecosystem is comprised of different actors across different organizational boundaries. They need a neutral, objective actor to understand the different needs and motives for collaboration and to find a common ground for collaboration.
You can use these tools as inspiration and guidance for your own ecosystem facilitation work or seek for new ideas in various phases of ecosystem development. The tools support different development phases of ecosystem. We call these phases explore, build and grow.
